It’s the height of Summer and a front of bruised thunderheads roll in from the West. Lightning will rent the evening sky and meet the earth somewhere in these hills. From home we look out towards Mount Piper and Bald Hill and the hidden source of the Seven’s creek beyond. The light is scattered and distorted, welcoming the blues and violets into the eye. I wanted to paint this country in this pallet, the colours of summer storms and darkening distant mountains. There is always a marked difference between the idea of a painting and the finished work and here was the lovely surprise of the lightning shaped Sevens, like a night sky torn with lightning. And the sense that the country is somehow a reflection of the depth of the night sky.
